MATT COSTA [Part II]

Picking up from Part I's entry, Matt did a kick ass set at the Blind Pig. I sometimes don't enjoy Michigan audiences. We have the reputation out there for either being a tough crowd or down right lame; however, the Blind Pig sports quality fans and people at all times... and this group was a true home crowd.

The venue was far more packed than Matt's last appearance at the Magic Stick in Detroit on 05/10/06. What I favored most within the growth of the south-eastern fan base was the overall existing knowledge of Costa's music. People were openly singing and cheering along. I have a firm belief that when more college-aged men are happy, drunkenly-screaming at the act in encouragement...it is a good show.

I was thoroughly impressed to see Jacob on stage. With talk that he had to enter a local hospital after their accident, I didn't even know if he would stick with the tour.

After the set, we caught up with Matt's manager Chris for a talk about the road. At the time we found him, he was pacing the halls of the venue, gathering band members and equipment, preparing to pack up for the night. They shut down the top floor of the Blind Pig fairly quickly, so Matt and fans hung out in the lower bar while the crew struck down the premises. Chris was thrilled to run into familiar faces again on the tour, and was happy to inform further press that the band and Matt were fine. He said the accident did shake up members and was a true wake up call, reminding them how important every moment is. I could tell from the look across his face that he was REALLY appreciative of the Michigan love. Chris noted that both the Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor audiences we so generous post accident and theft, that it gave them the momentum to keep on trucking along. GO MICHIGAN!

Here is Part II of the ongoing Spotlight Artist series on Matt Costa. I am checking in with Chris sometime later this week to see how the gang is doing out on the road and will let you know probably sometime after Langerado.

On the video, you will find full coverage of Matt's performance at Borders in Ann Arbor featuring songs "Josephine," "Mr. Pitiful," "Miss Magnolia," and "Vienna." There are two parts to the video so be sure to check them both out!

LANGERADO 2008 :
BRETT DENNEN & ANTIBALAS
BRETT DENNEN

Ben has been a fan of Brett for quite a while now and other than him name dropping him, I hadn't been exposed to his music. I caught his name under Rolling Stones 10 Artist to Watch... but I never tuned in. Then - as we were gearing up for this coming festival season, I finally sat back.

Brett is simply refreshing. A storyteller in every capacity of the word. His constant usage of metaphors and passion for describing the emotions within him keep you interested from beginning to end. His voice and words have drawn comparisons to the great Dylan and I can surely see why. Like Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, Dennen is a crafter who uses words as his only tool. Occasionally good instrumentation can accompany the battle, and with the mastering of production, we hear that good battle fought (and won) on Dennen's album; however, something tells me that he is even more so compelling just holding the guitar and communicating his art. -R. BIO:

Singer-songwriter Brett Dennen joins forces with John Mayer this summer to offer fans ‘So Much More’ on their nationwide tour. The duo will crisscross North America making stops in every major city imaginable and in between dates supporting John Mayer, Dennen and his band will make headlining appearances at clubs throughout the country. Already selling out large clubs like NY’s Bowery Ballroom and LA’s El Rey, on his next solo run Dennen moves up to one thousand plus seat capacity theaters including San Francisco’s legendary The Fillmore (July 12).

This summer’s tour finds Brett Dennen riding high on the success of his latest release, the celebrated ‘So Much More’ (Dualtone Music Group). The album showcases Dennen’s deft abilities as a singer, songwriter, and guitar player on songs like “She’s Mine”, “Ain’t No Reason,” and “Darlin Do Not Fear.” The ten original pieces that comprise ‘So Much More’ feature Dennen’s troubadour aesthetic and establish him as a worthy descendant of the great American singer-songwriter tradition.

ANTIBALAS

As soon as I got the gig over at 89.1 WEMU (wemu.org) about a year ago, a friend of mine told me I HAD to listen to this group named Antibalas...who had just released an album called Security on Anti- records. So I did. And when I finished it, I ran to our station shelves and listened to their Ropeadope record releases Government Magic and Who Is This America?. I was floored at this gutsy form of jazz that delivered a message so powerful, it needed to stop at least twelve minutes of your time... and some tracks run longer!

On Security, as listeners we are treated to more of the Antibalas signature horns and cymbals crashing with voice, echoing the thriving melody through drums, and the opinion towards American and lifelong politics is still at the forefront. Sometimes, I question how I can get so upset or motivated by the same things, yet never take a different course of action. In contrast, somehow, Anitbalas continues to keep the same game going in their music... but you never know which court they will be at. One thing is for sure, the band steadily knocks it out the park!

"They lead the pack..." - Pitchforkmedia.com

True, some bands are simply meant to lead, and Brooklyn's Antibalas--as tough and diverse as the city that birthed them nearly a decade ago--has continued to do just that. The group, whose name means "bulletproof" in Spanish, has indeed proved they possess the mettle to not only survive but also thrive by employing a musical arsenal that has become known worldwide. Initially using the revolutionary blueprint of afrobeat as a launching pad, the dozen-strong members of Antibalas weave a rich tapestry of latin, jazz, classical, funk and soul into their horn-driven mix. Words fail in trying to describe the result: simultaneously polyrhythmic and political, independent and contagious, and the reason why many have credited the band for introducing afrobeat's framework to a new generation.

Always looking to push their unique sound further, however, Antibalas recently entered the studio to record their fourth album with much-heralded musician/producer John McEntire (Tortoise, Stereolab, Tom Ze). Holed up for a month in McEntire's Chicago lair, the band explored and unleashed sonic sides of them not previously tapped. The resulting gem is guaranteed to shock and dazzle new and old fans alike, and will be forthcoming from ANTI- Records (no, not just because they share half a name), known for distinguished releases over the years from such artists as Solomon Burke, Tom Waits, the Refugee All-Stars and Blackalicious. The new album and record deal illustrate Antibalas' penchant for taking chances, building upon a history of previous fiery album releases and recent, stunning collaborations with diverse heavyweights such as Medeski, Martin and Wood, TV on the Radio, Baaba Maal and Gomez.

As distinguished as their recordings may be though, Antibalas has truly become renowned via their relentless live show. And though it's certainly no easy task to keep (and feed) such a vast ensemble on the road, the band has managed to average over 100 concerts a year, incessantly traversing the U.S, Canada and Europe in venues large and small be they the sweaty clubs of Brooklyn or in front of hordes of festival goers in places like Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Montreux and Roskilde. 2004 also bore witness to the group's first-ever tour to Japan, as well as debuts at the Glastonbury and Coachella music festivals. It's not by chance the Village Voice exclaimed "their music is right on time," while the New York Times, the New Yorker, Rolling Stone Magazine and a slew of others have taken serious notice. Make no mistake, as XLR8R exclaims, Antibalas are indeed "the baddest on the block."

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
